"I have four phrases to share with you: 1. Take the world as one's own responsibility; 2. Read thousands of books and travel thousands of miles; 3. Dare to be ahead; 4. Be a good journalist and journalism researcher,” said Mr. Fang Hanqi, a first-class honorary professor in Renmin University of China, at the opening ceremony.

On the morning of September 10th, the school opening ceremony for postgraduates was held in the studio of the Mingde Journalism Building. All teachers of the School, 163 registered postgraduate students in class of year 2019 and 35 doctoral students participated. The ceremony was presided over by Professor Zhou Yong, Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Journalism & Communication, Renmin University of China.

On the 35th Teacher’s Day, Hu Baijing, Executive Dean of the School presented flowers to Mr. Fang on behalf of all teachers and students of the school, wishing Mr. Fang a happy holiday and thanking him for his hard work and outstanding contribution to the School. Dean Hu proposed that the freshmen should summarize, confirm and creatively transform the roots and soul of the School. He expects that the students will be on a broad and right road in the future study and scientific research process, also be responsible, creative and being ahead.

Mr. Fang congratulated and welcomed the freshmen who entered J-School. He hoped that the students could become a viable force to promote further development of the School.

Professor Yang Baojun, on behalf of all teachers, hoped that the freshmen would cherish the time in school, make full use of school resources, read more books(especially classics), and actively communicate with tutors. He also hoped the students could be more sincere, always seeking for truth, goodness and beauty in the process of learning and scientific research, and do not be afraid of falsehood, evil and ugliness.

Yao Jinghong, the representative of postgraduates of year 2019, Lina, the representative of international students, and Liu Zexi, the representative of doctoral students, spoke in turn. Yao think that students should maintain a broad vision, be rigorous and modest, and seek truth from facts during the postgraduate study phase, and work hard to find one’s own path to the future.

Lina, an international student from Iraq, said she felt warmth and kindness during the four-year-undergraduate life here in the School of Journalism. She hoped that the international students could master the professional courses and at the same time learn Chinese language and culture well, communicate with the teachers and cherish the time in the School.

Liu Zexi recalled his experience from being lazy to working hard in the undergraduate period. Standing at a new starting point as a doctoral student, he would encourage and spur himself even more, hoping his story can encourage others to make progress together.

The postgraduate tutors of the Department of Journalism, Department of Communication, Department of Audiovisual Communication, Department of Advertising and Media Economics of the School of Journalism introduced their own research fields and the basic situation of each major in the School to the freshmen, and welcome the freshmen to actively communicate with each other.
