'China and the World: Cooperation, Challenges, and Win-win' seminar held in Beijing

The "China and the World: Cooperation, Challenges and Win-win" seminar, co-hosted by China Media Group (CMG) and Renmin University of China (RUC), was held in Beijing on May 30.

Shen Haixiong, vice minister of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and president of CMG, delivered a speech through video. Lin Shangli, president of RUC, spoke at the event. Fan Yun, deputy editor-in-chief of CMG and editor-in-chief of China Global Television Network (CGTN), and Wang An, executive director of CRRC Corporation Limited (CRRC), also attended the event.

Djoomart Otorbaev, former Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan, Grzegorz W. Kolodko, former Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance of Poland and founding director of the TIGER at Kozminski University, Ian Phillips, director of the News and Media Division of the United Nations Department of Global Communications, as well as experts and scholars from RUC, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and representatives of relevant institutions held in-depth exchanges on topics such as Chinese-style modernization, and exchanges and mutual learning among different civilizations.

"To make China better understood by the world, China's stories ought to be told vividly," Shen said. Six years since the establishment of CMG, its international communication capacity has continued to soar. Its high-quality programs, like the AI-generated animation series "Poems of Timeless Acclaim," have been widely praised.

"To make China better embrace the world, we need to strengthen exchanges, and mutual learning among civilizations ought to be strengthened. CMG has created a series of international media cooperation mechanisms, such as the Global Partners Program," he added.

"To promote a better tomorrow for China and the world, consensus on global development is necessary. CMG will broadcast the Paris Olympics with world-class production and broadcasting capacity, playing a 'more united' Olympic movement," he added.

Lin put forward three expectations: First, to open up channels for global development and cooperation, undertaking new cultural missions; second, to cultivate the innovative momentum of global cooperation, and jointly promote innovations in knowledge, theories and methodology innovation and third, to promote exchanges and mutual learning among different civilizations with various forms of academic and cultural dialogues, and open up a new chapter of inter-civilization cooperation.

The "China and the World: Cooperation, Challenges and Win-win" global public opinion survey Blue Book, compiled by the New Era International Communication Research Institute, was released during the event. The institute was jointly established by CMG and RUC in May 2023. Through multiple global public opinion surveys, the Blue Book comprehensively presents the international community's cognition and attitude towards China and major global issues.

During the roundtable discussion, the guests exchanged views on topics such as "The world we face in 2024" and "A world without 'filters'."

Otorbaev said that the experience of Chinese-style modernization is worth learning from by developing countries and that China is promoting global connectivity through the Belt and Road Initiative and many other effective means.

Kolodko mentioned that although there are many differences among countries in different fields, they should grasp the opportunities of globalization and promote common development.

The guests agreed that the world needs fewer "filters" but more truth, and that exchanges and mutual learning among different civilizations should be actively promoted to build consensus on cooperation in the international community.
