Fifty professionals in the media industry were appointed as industry mentors to the graduate students of grade 2021 and 2022 in the School of Journalism and Communication, while 21 among them took part in the appointment ceremony on December 2.

 

 

The Industry Mentor Program for Master Program in International Journalism and Communication and for Professional Master Programs aims at providing students with guidance in their vocational development by pairing each one of them with a chosen mentor in the field.

 

 

Han Xiaoning (Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Journalism and Communication) officiated the ceremony, representatives from the Graduate School and the School of Journalism and Communication as well as other professors and students attended the ceremony.

 

Zhou Yong (Secretary of the Party Committee and Deputy Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication) extended his welcome and gratitude to all, then he presented the history and the current education system of the School of Journalism and Communication, especially its interdisciplinary, intercultural and cross-media modes of talent cultivation, in which the Industry Mentor Program plays a vital role.

 

Song Jian (Deputy Dean of the Graduate School) praised the endeavor done by the School of Journalism and Communication in putting forward the Industry Mentor Program to pool the resources in the academic field and in the media industry. She suggested that professors and media workers should make concerted efforts in order to cultivate more talents in media and contribute further to development of the School.

The industry mentors also exchanged their views. Huang Wen from Xinhua News Agency pointed out that the rigid demand from the public for serious journalism required students to stay sensitive to news and to always pursue professionalism in their career.

 

Cao Lin from China Youth Daily advocated for the establishment of a shared community between the academic circle and the media industry with the help of the dual mentor system, so that the system could not only benefit the students but also create opportunities for the mentors and professors to communicate with each other.

 

Chen Lin from Phoenix Satellite Television encouraged students to broaden their horizons and to keep an eye on events happening around the globe while continuously improving their expertise in the university.

 

After that, four student representatives delivered their speeches respectively. Zhang Huifeng (Deputy Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication) concluded the meeting by encouraging students to grasp the opportunity and keep in close contact with their industry mentors.

 

 

The School of Journalism and Communication of Renmin University pioneered in carrying out master and doctoral education in journalism. The School began to recruit master students in 1978, established a master degree program in 1981, then a doctoral degree program in 1984. In 2010, the School set up professional master programs in journalism and communication. Since 2018, the School introduced reforms by adding the research direction of big data into its programs. It also cooperated with the School of Business to incorporate the research direction of strategic communication into its programs.

In 2017, it launched the Belt and Road Global Communication All-English Master Program, and in 2019 the Intelligent Communication Part-time Master Program. In addition, it has established Master Program in International Journalism and Communication in 2009 under the guidance of the Ministry of Education and the Department of the CPC Central Committee.
