The lecture focusing on "China’s Stories & International Expressions" was held on November 25th, and professor Zhao Qizheng, the dean of the School of Journalism & Communication, said the external communication of China depends on efforts of every Chinese.
Zhao, also a former director of The State Council Information Office, emphasized President Xi Jinping’s words that we should improve the ability of international communication and tell China's stories well.
“China’s stories are what really existed and happened in China. To tell China’s stories well is to present a real, three-dimensional and comprehensive China to the world,” Zhao pointed that, “It is particularly important for Chinese to tell China’s stories well currently, since there is a phenomenon that China’s stories told by some international media are fake and inaccurate.”
As a former director of the Preparatory Committee and Management Committee of Shanghai Pudong New Area, Zhao talked about his work when preparing the development and opening-up of Pudong.
“You should give foreign leaders a taste of ripe apples on the farm instead of giving them a long report on GDP”, he said.
Differences in languages, lifestyles, religions and historical problems all can be cultural barriers to the expression and communication of China’s stories, according to Zhao.
“Government diplomacy and public diplomacy is a supplement to media communication”, Zhao added, “Public diplomacy means to communicate China and Chinese people by cultural exchanges with the world.”
Zhao emphasized that reporters should learn knowledge of other areas except for the major courses, when replying to questions from audiences.
Zhao also gave the newly published book, China’s Stories & International Expressions, to students and teachers as presents at the end of the lecture.
The book is a summary of Zhao’s experience in external communication, containing over 60 cases about his practices.
