School of Journalism and Communication(SJC) of Renmin University of China established Student Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Career Development Committee, announced on the Summit Forum on Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Career Development on the morning of December 25, 2020.
The committee and the forum are intended to deepen the educational reform of journalism and communication discipline and promote teaching research and practice on students' innovative entrepreneurship and career development. Several industry experts and academic experts were invited to share their student entrepreneurship and career development views.
Zhou Yong, executive dean of SJC, expressed his welcome to the guests, teachers and students present, and briefly reported the design and current achievements of talent development of SJC. He noted that SJC has always been student-centered and striven to cultivate talents that adapt to the development of the times and respond to the the country’s need. He hoped that the experts would give more support and guidance to the new design and vision of the School’s talent development.

Zhou Yong announced the establishment of the Student Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Career Development Committee of SJC, presented an appointment letter to Sun Yusheng as the Director of the committee and adjunct professor of SJC, and to Zhu Bo, Chen Zongbing, Lang Fengwei and Cao Lin as members of the committee.

Sun Yusheng, a member of the editorial board of CCTV, deputy director of CCTV, expressed his heartfelt congratulations on the establishment of the committee. He said that the School of Journalism and Communication educates students academically and plans for their future careers, which is very worthy of recognition. He added that the current development of technology has changed the landscape of journalism and communication and how journalism education is delivered and provides technical support for the integration of education and practice in the college. He said, “we can make more innovations. I hope our committee can play a greater role in the future”.
Lu Xiangao, deputy editor-in-chief of Guangming Daily and chairman of Guangming.com, combing his long experience in journalism, explained the types of talents needed in today's news industry. He said, “in the era of new media, the news industry needs all-rounders, inter-disciplinary talents and professionals, which requires universities to train Omnimedia talents according to the industrial ecology. At the same time, he pointed out that there is still a shortage of journalistic talents, and the identity of media people in the process of news production is also more diversified, so the cultivation of talents is a systematic project that requires the joint efforts of the academia and the industry.
Zhu Bo, a media veteran from CCTV and a councilor of Renmin University of China, recalled the difficulties in the early days of graduation, and expressed his confidence in the School’s talent development. He believed that the School’s alumni resources are valuable, providing great help in the graduates’ employment.
Li Yihang, vice president of Yangcheng Evening Paper, noted the importance of developing the awareness of innovation and entrepreneurship from macro to micro through vivid real-life examples. He emphasized the need to add industry to the talent training system, especially the cultural and creative industries serving the media industry, forming a double drive to provide students with broader employment options.
Yan Aihua, former deputy director of Shandong Television and president of Wuhan DDMC Culture & Sports Co. Ltd., referred to his own experience in a pre-recorded video and emphasized the significance of implementation capacity. He encouraged the students to put plans into practice.
Xie Li, Director and Co-President of CMC Holdings Co. Ltd., briefly described his own cross-industry and cross-discipline experience. He said, "I have worked from local media, central media to market-oriented media, and have done video, paper and new media, I have worked in both inside and outside the system for quite a few years". He shared with students various cross-field experiences and thinking patterns.
Chen Zongbing, Chairman of Legend Culture Development Group Co., Ltd., combining his own study and entrepreneurial experience, referred to the relationship between learning and practice. He emphasized that students should develop their core competitiveness, be open towards employment and have diverse career options.
Zhou Qilin, the experimenter of the Journalism and Communication Research Lab of SJC, gave an overview of the Imaging Workshop of the lab, including instructors, student team, hardware and software facilities, and achievements, etc. He also showed the work projects and plans for the future.

Fang Jie, associate professor of SJC, gave an overview of RUC Newsroom, introduced its operations management team, its achievements and honors, hoping that "in the future, we can train students to become the main entrepreneurial body, combined with our existing content features, finally turn our workshop into a repository of high-quality information and opinions and innovative data".

Chen Changfeng, Executive Vice President of School of Journalism and Communication, Tsinghua University, spoke as a representative of the academic community, saying, "In today's Internet economy, the journalism and communication community has become the most active source of entrepreneurship and innovation. This also leads to mindset changes and innovation in journalism and communication education, that is, the education should be down to earth and value the industry. We don't just use new technology as a tool, but we need to integrate technology into the minds of media people to help us judge and think".

Qiang Yuexin, dean of School of Journalism and Communication, Wuhan University, emphasized the significance of incorporating journalism practice to education from three aspects: discipline development, discipline content and national strategy. He noted that journalism practice should become the primary approach of talent training for journalism schools, and they should bring the outstanding industry talents into the faculty and promote the mutual transformation of the latest journalism practice and journalism theory.
Zhang Huifeng, Secretary of the Party Committee of SJC, concluded the summit, saying, "I hope that the academia and the industry can be more closely linked and work together to cultivate well-rounded and high-end talents, making greater contributions to the national journalism and communication industry."

Cheng Tong, an undergraduate student of the Class of 2020, was deeply impressed. He said, "After seeing the wonderful speech of the industry and academic experts, I feel proud of my identity as a journalism student of SJC." Chen Dong, another undergraduate student of the Class of 2020, said, "After attending the summit, we have a more in-depth understanding of the School’s experimental training program and talent training plans, be clearer of self-planing and career development, and my understanding of the interface between academia and industry deepened".
The Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Career Development Committee of the School of Journalism and Communication of Renmin University of China promotes the spirit of "innovation, entrepreneurship and excellence", focuses on developing students' awareness of innovation, entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial ability. Though building a second classroom for innovation, entrepreneurship and career development in the journalism and communication discipline, SJC creates a positive atmosphere for pedagogical research and practice. This provides strong intellectual support for building an innovative nation, to achieve the two centenary goals and national rejuvenation.
