Forum Review | "The encounters of culture": The First International Academic Forum for International Students of Journalism and Communication

Amid the surging tides of globalization, the collision and fusion of cultures are reshaping the world with unprecedented depth and breadth. As vital agents of cultural exchanges, international students bridge diverse civilizations and foster mutual understanding through their unique perspectives, open-mindedness, and relentless spirit of exploration. On the morning of October 27, 2024, the School of Journalism and Communication of Renmin University of China hosted the first "The encounters of culture" International Academic Forum for International Students of Journalism and Communication in Room 611 of the Mingde Journalism Building. International students from universities across China gathered to engage in lively discussions, sharing their academic practices and life experiences, allowing diverse cultures to converge and interact. The forum was hosted by Zhao Jin, Foreign Affairs Secretary of the Office of International Exchange and Cooperation at the School of Journalism and Communication, Renmin University of China. Distinguished commentators included Pan Wenjing, Editorial Director of Journalism Evolution, and Shu Kairong, Assistant Editor-in-Chief of Chinese Journal of Journalism and Communication.

Yan Yan, Deputy Party Secretary and Professor of the School of Journalism and Communication of Renmin University of China, delivered the opening speech. She recalled her experience of studying in the United States, candidly sharing how this academic journey deepened her understanding of international students' living conditions and communication needs, which inspired her to initiate the international student academic forum. "As the initiator, I hope to provide a platform for international students in China to enhance communication, exchange knowledge and foster mutual understanding through the bonds of friendship," she stated.

Next, international students from various countries and universities delivered academic presentations based on their research papers, showcased their findings and exchanged insights on their research directions.

Communication Challenges of Third Culture Kids in Society

An Yi, School of Journalism, Yunnan University

With the rapid advancement of globalization, the structure of human communication is undergoing continuous transformation. An Yi highlighted the uniqueness of "Third Culture Kids (TCKs)" as a distinct cultural group positioned at "cultural intersection points". These individuals often face challenges in three areas during cultural adaptation: self-identity, formation of values, and stress of cultural adaptation. She proposed that future research should focus on developing strategies and recommendations to address these challenges.

Exploratory Research on the Effects of Celebrity E-sports Player Endorsements on South Korean Consumers: Based on the Celebrity Effect and the Matching Hypothesis

Lin Chaoyuan, School of International Chinese Language Education, Beijing Normal University

From the perspective of the celebrity effect, Cui Yumin and Lin Chaoyuan used the method of group experiments to study the impact of celebrity e-sports player endorsements on South Korean consumers. They found that traditional advertising theories are also applicable in the field of e-sports advertising. However, different types of advertising endorsements have differential effects on consumers of different genders, which provides more room for exploration in future theoretical researches in the field of e-sports advertising.

Fluid Boundaries: Privacy Management of Overseas Student Purchasing Agents on Social Platforms

Liu Jiayi, Department of Chinese Language and Literature, East China Normal University

DONGHEESUN and Liu Jiayi focused on the prevalent phenomenon of overseas student purchasing agents. Through qualitative research methods, they probed into the privacy disclosure behaviors of this group on social platforms. They argued that while overseas students leverage privacy disclosure to attract traffic and conduct transactions on social platforms, they concurrently confront risks stemming from fluid privacy boundaries. In light of this discovery, they further proposed information management strategies such as privacy verification and privacy scheduling.

Analysis of the Multilingual Phenomenon in Kazakhstani Media from the Translanguaging Perspective and Its Cultural Significance

Fu Lisha, School of Journalism and Communication, Saint Petersburg State University

Bekkeldiyeva Eldana and Fu Lisha embarked from their personal experiences of living in multilingual environments and integrated the concept of translanguaging to focus on the multilingual phenomenon in Kazakhstani media and the cultural implications behind it. They contended that the multilingual phenomenon in Kazakhstani media has made positive contributions to social harmony and cultural integration. It plays a crucial role in mitigating cultural differences, fostering cultural identity, and strengthening national cohesion.

A Study on the Construction of China's National Image by CGTN's Xinjiang Anti-terrorism Documentaries from the Perspective of Three-level Framing Theory

Wen Jianguang, School of Journalism and Communication, Nanning Normal University

From the point of the three-level framing theory, Feng Chunyu and Wen Jianguang utilized content analysis to analyze how CGTN constructed China's national image on the international stage at the micro, meso, and macro levels. They argued that CGTN's documentaries, through objective and balanced reporting, have showcased the Chinese government's unwavering stance in combating terrorism and safeguarding national security and unity. These documentaries have helped shape a responsible and resolute national image, serving as an important means for effectively telling China's stories and conveying China's voice.

“Exploring Cultural Exchanges and National Identity Expressions on TikTok_ The Interplay of #vietphuc and #hanphuc Hashtags in Vietnam”

Li Qiuying, School of Journalism and Communication, Renmin University of China

Li Qiuying focused on the impact of TikTok on cultural communication, cultural promotion, and national identity. She examined the interaction between the cultural symbols representing Vietnam and China through the hashtags #vietphuc and #hanphuc. She found that the active interaction of these two hashtags on TikTok enhances Vietnamese audiences' understanding and identification with their own traditional culture, while also increasing their awareness of Chinese culture, thereby promoting cultural exchange and interaction between China and Vietnam.

“The Overall Narrative Framework in Science Fiction Films: A Theoretical Study on Mediating Human-Human and Human-Machine Relationships”

Ji Li, School of Journalism and Communication, Wuhan University

Li Weimin and Ji Li, starting from the narrative texts of science fiction films, explored the collision and mediation of the binary opposition between humans and machines from the perspective of media philosophy. They dialectically discussed the Eastern and Western philosophical debates on the relationship between science and humanity. Through case studies, they discovered the myth of consciousness evolution in science fiction films, which provides a solution to mediate the human-machine binary conflict in real life.

“Protecting Privacy on Social Media:Mitigating Interpersonal Conflicts through Identity Masking and Suspended Use, Mediated by Privacy Safety Motivations”

Niu Jing, School of Journalism and Information Communication, Huazhong University of Science and Technology

Bilal Mazhar and Niu Jing focused on the behavior of identity masking and suspended use of social media to reduce interpersonal conflicts in today's social media environment. Using a sample of social media users from Pakistan, their research found that interpersonal conflicts on social media increase users' concerns about privacy safety, thereby prompting users to mask their identities or even suspend their use of social media. This helps to understand the important role of users' privacy awareness in social media interactions.

“Overseas Dissemination and Reception of ' A Dream of Red Mansions’”

Yin Rujun, Beijing International Studies University

Zhang Tianqi, Beijing International Studies University

Inspired by their own experiences and the growing demand for cross-cultural translation, Yin Rujun and Zhang Tianqi proposed the research topic of the overseas dissemination and audience reception of "A Dream of Red Mansions". They compared and analyzed the strategic choices of different translation texts and their reception by overseas audiences. They pointed out: "Dissemination leads to collision, and acceptance leads to mutual learning." Reflecting on the history of "A Dream of the Red Mansions" being introduced to English-speaking countries can provide strategic references for future academic exchanges between China and foreign countries in handling similar cultural dissemination issues.

Research on Chinese International Communication in Indonesian Mainstream Media

Yuan Jie, College of Arts and Media, Tongji University

Yuan Jie observed the rapid development of Chinese international communication within the broader cultural context and the policy-driven evolution of China-Indonesia international relations. His research focused on the practice of Chinese international communication in Indonesian mainstream media and its impact on cultural exchanges between China and Indonesia. He found that Indonesian media adopt a multi-layered narrative framework in their Chinese-language reporting, particularly having a positive impact in the fields of education and culture. At the same time, if Indonesian media can report more balancedly on the value of the Chinese language in the economic and social fields, it would help deepen mutual understanding between China and Indonesia and further promote the spread of Chinese language in Indonesia.

Pan Wenjing and Shu Kairong provided detailed comments on the students’ presentations, addressing research questions, theoretical applications, research methods, and academic writing, and offered concrete suggestions for future revisions and improvements. While acknowledging the students’ unique research perspectives, the professors reminded them to adhere to academic writing norms, enhance the rigor of their research methods. When conducting communication research in the international field and from a cross-cultural perspective, special attention should be paid to the particularity of the research objects and the generalizability of the research questions.

Finally, the forum announced the list of award-winning papers. The first prize was awarded to Fluid Boundaries: Privacy Management of Overseas Student Purchasing Agents on Social Platforms by DONGHEESUN and Liu Jiayi from East China Normal University. The second and third prizes were won respectively by Li Weimin and Ji Li from Wuhan University and Yuan Jie from Tongji University.

Filled with valuable insights, the morning session of the forum concluded under the warm midday sun. In the afternoon, international students continued with a round table discussion on Cultural Interactions of International Students in China: Experiences, Gains, and Challenges. They freely shared their observations, thoughts, and reflections on studying in China. There are no boundaries in academic and cultural exchanges. This forum built a bridge for cultural exchange and a tunnel for civilizational dialogue. Diverse cultures transcend geographical distances and meet here, shining with vibrant brilliance.
