To deepen collaboration in journalism education between Chinese and Russian and address the challenges of the intelligent communication era, Zhou Yong, Dean of the School of Journalism of Renmin University of China, led a Chinese delegation to visit the Faculty of Journalism at Lomonosov Moscow State University from October 22 to 25, 2025. The delegation participated in the 2025 Annual Conference of China-Russia Alliance of Journalism Education Universities and 17th Moscow Reading Conference, further expanding Sino-Russian cooperation in journalism education and scientific research, and injecting fresh momentum into the countries’ exchanges in media education and humanities.

Established in 2016, the China-Russia Alliance of Journalism Education Universities is the first mechanism for higher education cooperation in journalism between the two nations. Initiated by Renmin University of China, Lomonosov Moscow State University, and Saint Petersburg State University, the Alliance has grown to include 35 prominent universities from both countries. Over the past decade, the Alliance has achieved notable success in joint talent cultivation, faculty exchange, and academic cooperation.

The annual conference officially opened on October 23. Elena Vartanova, the Russian chairman and Dean of the Faculty of Journalism, Lomonosov Moscow State University, delivered a speech entitled “New Vectors of Russian Journalism Education and the Process of Digitalization: Challenges and Implementation at MSU.” She emphasized the profound transformations and structural challenges brought by digitalization to journalism education, and systematically introduced Lomonosov Moscow State University’s leading practices in curriculum restructuring, technological integration, and talent cultivation, showcasing Russia’s strategic adjustments for the digital era.

As the Chinese chairman, Zhou Yong delivered a keynote speech titled “AI, Platform and the New Silk Road: China’s Blueprint for Next-Gen Media Professionals” at the opening ceremony.

In the subsequent roundtable forum, “Artificial Intelligence: New Challenges for Journalism and Media Education,” experts and scholars from both China and Russia discussed the impact of AI technologies on journalism and journalism education. Russian representatives included Professor Elena Vartanova from Moscow State University and Professor Anatoly Puyu, Director of the Institute of Higher Journalism and Mass Communication at Saint Petersburg State University, among other distinguished academics. The Chinese delegation—with 12 representatives from 8 universities, such as Professor Zhang Hongjun, Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication at Nanjing University; Professor Guo Xiaoan, Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication at Chongqing University; Professor Yan Yan, Deputy Party Secretary of the School of Journalism at Renmin University of China; and Associate Dean Guo Xiaoping of Journalism and Information Communication School of Huazhong University of Science and Technology—exchanged views on how AI is reshaping news production, ethical norms, curriculum systems, and cross-cultural communication. Participants unanimously agreed that China and Russia should strengthen resource sharing and collaborative innovation in intelligent media education.

On October 24, the Chinese delegation visited Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia and held working talks with Viktor V. Barabash, Dean of the Faculty of Linguistics, and Vice Dean Natalia Poplavskaya. Both sides discussed faculty development, student exchanges, and collaborative research, and positively anticipated the prospects of the Alliance’s annual meeting in 2026.

The China-Russia Alliance of Journalism Education Universities originated from the 2015 “China-Russia Media Exchange Year” initiative announced by both countries’ leaders. Officially established on July 9, 2016, at Renmin University of China, the Alliance has become one of the largest and most influential platforms for Sino-Russian cooperation in the field of journalism and communication education. As the permanent Secretariat for the Chinese side, the School of Journalism of RUC continues to promote pragmatic cooperation in academic seminars, faculty and student exchanges, and joint courses, facilitating deep integration and development of Sino-Russian journalism education in the context of digitalization and intelligence.

This year’s annual meeting not only continued the fine tradition of Sino-Russian cooperation in journalism education but also broadened the scope of bilateral collaboration against the backdrop of artificial intelligence. It pioneered new pathways to building a globally oriented journalism education community.
