School of Journalism and Communication

at Renmin University of China

The School of Journalism and Communication at Renmin University of China (RUC) was founded in 1955. With more than sixty years of continuous development, it has become a nationally acclaimed institution for journalism and communication education, a leader in education reform and innovation, and an important platform for global journalism and communication education exchanges. In the four rounds of national disciplinary evaluations conducted by the Ministry of Education of China, its Journalism and Communication Discipline has been consistently ranked No. 1. In 2017, it has been inducted into the Chinese “Double First-Class” discipline plan.

The school’s Journalism and Communication program is classified as the first-class key discipline by the Ministry of Education. The school has a national experimental teaching demonstration center and a Ministry of Education Key Research Base of humanities and social sciences - the Journalism and Social Development Research Center. Currently, the school has five departments, including Journalism, Communication, Audio-visual Communication, Advertising & Media Economics and International Journalism and Communication. It has established a comprehensive talent training system covering undergraduates, masters and doctoral degrees.

As of December 2020, the school has a total of 1,186 students, including 672 undergraduates, 353 masters, 165 doctoral students and a total of 124 international students. It has built an ecological training system that breaks through professional barriers for nurturing outstanding journalism and communication talents. Starting in 2011, it has launched dual-degree programs for undergraduates, including Journalism & Law experimental program, Creative Communication experimental program, International Journalism and Communication full English program, Future Communication experimental program; these programs are oriented toward students' interests and practical needs. It has also created a special program of Olympic communication that serves the needs of the 2022 Winter Olympics. At the graduate level, it has built several talent-training programs, such as big data and communication, strategic communication, as well as a full program taught in English that respond to the needs of industry and society.

The school has established exchanges and collaborations with more than a dozen world-renowned universities and research institutions overseas, including the US, Canada, Russia, Britain, Germany, Japan, South Korea and Singapore. It offers English-taught courses at the BA, MA and Ph.D. levels and promotes studying abroad for both undergraduate and graduate students. It now has more than 60 faculty members. Their focal areas of research include journalism history and theory, communication theory, international communication, media economics and management, advertising, intercultural communication, audio-visual communication and public diplomacy. It now houses two academic journals, one of them - the Chinese Journal of Journalism and Communication – is a national core journal with an impact factor ranking among the top in China.

The school is committed to building a platform for academic and cultural exchanges at home and abroad. It is currently accepting applications for BA, MA and Ph.D. studies for students all over the world.


Program Introduction

I. Chinese Degree Program

1. Undergraduate Programs

The school offers five undergraduate majors for students to choose from and students will be certified upon graduation. Diplomas will be awarded to students who have obtained the required credits of their major.

BA in Journalism

The program trains journalists, editors and management talents for news media such as newspapers, radio and television.

BA in Communication

The program trains public communication talents for government, enterprises, new media and social organizations.

BA in Broadcasting

The program trains journalists, editors and management talents in the field of audio and visual communication.

BA in Advertising

The program trains planning, creativity, production and management talents in the advertising field.

BA in International Journalism and Communication

The program trains journalists, editors and management talents in the field of global communication and intercultural communication.

2. Graduate Programs

●MA Program

The School offers four MA degrees: Journalism, Media Economics, Communication and Broadcast Journalism. The programs aim to cultivate interdisciplinary talents with equal emphasis on application and research in four domains.

MA in Journalism

The MA in Journalism trains students to master news gathering and writing, news editing and news production while emphasizing the cultivation of theoretical research and teaching ability which contribute to students’ competence for professional teaching and scientific research in relevant institutes.

MA in Communication

The MA in Communication trains students to master the practice of new media, various social media and convergent media. It also emphasizes theoretical research and the cultivation of teaching ability which contribute to students’ competence for professional teaching and research work in relevant institutes.

MA in Media Economics

The MA in Media Economics trains students to be familiar with the practical business of media economy and media management, and be able to undertake the front-line practice of media. It also emphasizes the cultivation of theoretical research and teaching ability which contribute to students’ competence for professional teaching and scientific research in relevant institutes

MA in Broadcast Journalism

The MA in broadcasting trains students to master radio and television collecting, writing, editing and production. It also emphasizes the theoretical research and teaching ability of radio and television which contribute to students’ competence for professional teaching and scientific research in relevant institutes.

PhD Program

The Ph.D. program takes four years and offers four specializations: Journalism, Radio & TV Broadcasting, Media Economics and Communication. The curriculum consists of core courses, methodology courses, professional courses, electives, an academic forum and prerequisite course

Ph.D. in Journalism

The specialization in Journalism familiarizes students with the research on and the practices and theories of journalism and communication, with a focus on the former. Students take courses, pass written and oral exams and carry out independent research culminating in a dissertation. After graduation students are equipped to do research and teach at universities. They could also take positions in government agencies and media organizations.

Ph.D. in Broadcast Journalism

The specialization in Broadcast Journalism familiarizes students with the theories and professional practice of journalism and communication, with a focus on theories about radio and TV. Students take courses, complete written and oral exams and carry out independent research culminating in a dissertation. After graduation students are equipped to do research and teach at universities. They could also take positions in government agencies and media organizations.

II. English Degree Program

Global Journalism and Communication Master’s Program on Belt Road Initiative (BRJC)

The School of Journalism and Communication, Renmin University of China launched the Global Journalism and Communication Master’s Program on Belt Road Initiative (BRJC) in 2017. The program was officially launched in March 2018. BRJC, a two-year professional Master’s program taught in English, aims at training communication talents with international perspectives, multimedia reporting and storytelling proficiency, and dedication to promoting mutual understanding between different cultures and countries.

The program’s curriculum consists of a variety of intermediate and advanced-level communication and journalism courses, including media history and theories development, media industry, practical skills and research methods. Additionally, the program offers Chinese language training and courses on Chinese politics, economy, society and culture.

In the first year, students focus on coursework and reporting practice. In the second year, students focus on social practice or media internships and work on master’s theses on practical topics. Students in the program work closely with advisors and other faculty members. All the multimedia production facilities and studios at the school are available to students on an appointment basis.


Scholarship

I. Chinese Government Scholarship(CGS)

Bilateral Program

The applicant should first apply to the dispatching authorities for overseas study of his or her home country, such as Chinese embassies and consulates abroad or other organizations. The dispatching authorities will send the application information to the university to decide whether the application can be approved. Chinese University Program

The applicant should apply for this scholarship at the university when applying for the master's or Ph.D. program. After receiving and reviewing the application, the university will submit relevant materials to the Chinese Scholarship Council. The final list will be issued by the Chinese Scholarship Council. II. Beijing Municipal Government New Foreign Students Scholarship

Applicants shall apply to the university during their application for self-supported study. The university will compile the final list of candidates according to the related regulations after receiving the application documents, and International Students Office will release the final list of recipients. The scholarship will be given as a full or half waiver of the tuition fee of their first-year study at RUC.

III. RUC International Students Outstanding Award

Applicants shall apply to RUC during their application for self-supported study. The university will compile a final list of candidates according to the related regulations after receiving the application documents, and International Students Office will release the list of recipients.

IV. China Studies Program Scholarship

The "China Studies Program" (CSP) Ph.D. Fellowships were established by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation, which united with China's top universities and outstanding scholars, and is committed to providing opportunities and support to overseas young scholars and doctoral programs for studying in China. The program includes the Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship and the Ph.D. in China Fellowship. Young scholars who meet the requirements are welcome to apply.

●The Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship: Sponsors outstanding doctoral students enrolled in foreign universities to come to China for study, joint research and doctoral dissertation writing; generally, it is for one semester to two academic years.

●The Ph.D. in China Fellowship: Sponsors outstanding foreign master's graduates to study for doctoral degrees in Chinese universities; according to the requirements of the university's educational system, it is generally to be completed within three or four years.

V. SJC International Students Outstanding Award

The School of Journalism and Communication (SJC) will provide scholarships for international students to assist with partial tuition, depending on a comprehensive evaluation of applicants. The scholarship cannot be obtained with CGS or any other scholarship at the same time and cannot be used to waive the tuition fee. Details will be available before registration.
