Announcing

The 2020 National Communication Strategy Forum on

Global Communication and National Development: Building Communities Across Borders

Beijing, China

June 18, 2020

Renmin University of China’s School of Journalism and National Communication Strategy Research Center proudly announce the 2020 National Communication Strategy Forum on “Global Communication and National Development: Building Communities Across Borders.” The Forum will be held in Beijing on June 18, 2020.

The Forum aims to address some of the urgent and far-reaching issues related to the complex and dynamic interrelationships between global communication and national development. We witness in the recent years the emergence of an array of digital communication technologies such as ubiquitous networks, social media platforms, big data, artificial intelligence, etc. The emergence and increasingly widespread use of these technologies has brought about new possibilities in cross-cultural communication among people and nations, in the re-media/tion between the physical world and the virtual world, and in the trans/formation of new forms of cross-border networks and human communities. But while these cutting-edge digital technologies have facilitated much excitement and development opportunities in diverse industries and commercial enterprises, arts and entertainment fields, as well as various aspects of national development, they have also brought about numerous social, economic, political and cultural issues or challenges, especially from the perspectives of intercultural communication and international relations.

For example, what role can or should these digital communication technologies play in facilitating and maintaining constructive relationships among nations in ways that would promote mutual understanding and peaceful co-existence? How and to what extend can and should individual users of these digital technologies do in engendering their cross-border interactions with their counterparts? What are the opportunities and challenges facing nations, as well as individuals in cross-border consensus or community-building? How will advances in digital communications affect global journalism, international relations, multicultural human interaction, cross-border movement of cultural products and media capitals, education in global citizenship, global communication policy-making in national development, etc.?

We sincerely invite interested scholars, experts and industry leaders to participate in the 2020 Forum. We hope that through their presentations and exchanges, Forum participants will come up with recommendations for further academic and applied research that would eventually help foster best practices in cross-border community-building among nations from across the globe.

We welcome you to contact the organizer of the Forum at ncsrc@ruc.edu.cn to learn more about how you become a participant at the Forum or sign up for accessing further updates.
