The First Chinese Journalism Conference was held
2025-08-31The First Chinese Journalism Conference was held in Beijing on August 27, 2025. The conference, themed "Chinese-style Modernization and Journalism Communication," was jointly organized by the Institute of Journalism and Communication Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), the School of Journalism at Renmin University of China, the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the Research Center of Journalism and Social Development at Renmin University of China, and the New Media Research Centre of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. It was hosted by relevant research centers under the Institute of Journalism and Communication Studies at CASS, with academic support provided by Journalism & Communication, Chinese Journal of Journalism & Communication, Journalism Evolution, China Journalism Yearbook, and China Social Sciences Weekly.

Deans of journalism schools and renowned experts from 20 universities nationwide, along with representatives from research institutions under People's Daily, Xinhua News Agency, China Media Group, as well as relevant officials from Shanghai United Media Group, Southern Media Group, and Zhejiang Publication, attended the conference. Focusing on the systematic transformation of mainstream media in the context of Chinese-style modernization, they engaged in discussions on the mission and opportunities of journalism and communication in the new era amid new technologies.
Addressing the opening ceremony, Zheng Shuiquan, Deputy Secretary of the RUC Party Committee; Hu Zhengrong, Director of the CASS Institute of Journalism and Communication; and Zhou Yong, Dean of the RUC School of Journalism, emphasized the need to build an independent, practice-based, and globally oriented knowledge system for Chinese journalism. They expressed hope that the conference would spark new ideas by deepening industry-academia exchanges. The ceremony was chaired by Fan Chengzhi, Deputy Secretary of the CASS Institute of Journalism and Communication.
During the keynote session, insightful presentations were delivered by academic and industry experts, including Research Fellow Yin Yungong, former Director of the CASS Institute of Journalism and Communication; Professor Chen Lidan and Professor Zheng Baowei from RUC; Tian Li, Director of the Research Department at People's Daily; Liu Gang, Dean of the Xinhua News Agency Research Institute; Zhang Lisheng, Deputy Director of the Innovation and Development Research Center at CMG; Liu Yonggang, Editor-in-Chief of The Paper under Shanghai United Media Group; Li Pan, Editor-in-Chief of the "Zhejiang Publicity" Editorial Department; Dai Xuedong, Dean of the Nanfang Public Opinion and Data Research Institute under Nanfang Media Group; Professor Sui Yan, Dean of the School of Journalism at Communication University of China; and Professor Yang Baojun from the RUC School of Journalism.
Four sub-forums were held in line with the congress theme: "Systematic Transformation of Mainstream Media in the Process of Chinese-Style Modernization", "Opportunities and Challenges for the Journalism Industry in the Intelligent Era", "System and Mechanism Reform and Talent Support for Mainstream Media", and "Process Reengineering and Organizational Transformation of New-Type Mainstream Media".
At the First China Journalism Congress, Hu Zhengrong, Director of the Institute of Journalism and Communication of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, released his new book Chinese-Style Modernization and the Development of Journalism and Communication, and launched a joint initiative for the publication plan of a book series themed "Chinese-Style Modernization and Journalism and Communication".
